Also called Sword lily or simply Glads (the plural is gladioli though), gladiolus is one of the most favourite of all cut flowers, grown for its beautiful and showy flowers. The Gladiolus flower signifies remembrance. It also expresses infatuation, telling the receiver that he or she pierces the heart. All gladioli are easy to grow, colourful and make great cut flowers, hence their popularity. The flowers grow on tall spikes and are often found in cutting gardens or in the back along the border, adorning the garden with bright colourful tall flowers that will make for a wonderful addition to any scheme.

Notes: Relatively simple to grow, gladioli need full sun and light soil that is rich in organic matter. For prolonged flowering stagger planting at intervals of 10 to 14 days. They take 70 to 100 days to grow and flower so planting every couple of weeks or so gives flowers for a prolonged period. Use them as a striking accent among annuals and in perennial borders. Glads do well in containers, but must be carefully selected for this purpose because plants can grow to 4-6 ft. and become top heavy in full bloom. Staking is needed if they are exposed to wind. For long-lasting cut flowers, cut stems as soon as the first buds show colour. Keep the plants watered well during their growing period and mulch the soil around them to keep it moist. Feed them with low NPK fertilizer during the growth period and also before the first bloom.
